Seatbelt Usage

Value: 81.7%
Measurement Period: June 2015
Location: Allen County
Categories: Public Safety/Seatbelt Usage
What is this Indicator? This indicator shows annual average seat belt use of drivers at five distinct sites selected by the Miami University of Ohio.
Why this is important: Seat belts, when used, reduce the risk of fatal injury to front seat passenger car occupants by 45% and light-truck occupants by 60%.
Technical Note: 2015 seat belt observations were conducted at five sites by retired law enforcement officers, using a mthodology developed by Miami University of Ohio.  However, observations conducted in years 2009 through 2013, were conducted at 19 sites by local volunteers.  Volunteer observations versus retired law enforcement observations could explain the dramatic increase in seat belt use in 2014.
